| About The Mechanical Industries Council: |
The Mechanical Industries Council (MIC) serves about 200 union mechanical contracting firms whose members employ nearly 2,500 Local Union 72 pipe fitters and plumbers in Georgia. The Mechanical Industries Council primary purpose is to promote the work and improve business opportunities of its union employing contractor members, share management of a world class apprenticeship training program with labor and promulgate numerous educational programs for its members and their employees. The MIC organization had its beginnings over 50 years ago and its growth has been distinguished by the dedication of its contributing contractors. This dedication is exemplified by the high degree of contractor participation in organizational responsibilities and functions. One of the most tangible evidences of this dedication is the Mechanical Trades Institute (MTI) whose modern classrooms, shops and labs are located in Atlanta’s Fulton Industrial Park. The institute also has training facilities in Rome, Macon and Albany, Georgia. Apprenticeship classes, of which there are now two a year, provide a five-year curriculum in the plumbing, pipe fitting or service trades. The total number of apprentices exceeds 300 a year. In mid-2000, a modern addition to the institute was dedicated with a large delegation of city, state and federal officials in attendance. With MIC sponsorship, the institute provides continuing education classes for journeymen. Other MIC educational programs and seminars augment these programs for superintendents and other field managers in the contractor members’ labor force. These programs facilitate management-labor teamwork, pride in our industry and productivity. MIC voice, opinions, and concerns are heard as MIC represents the needs of the union employing contractor. MIC combats unfair labor practices and the elimination of unsatisfactory conditions in the trade. MIC contributing contractors work together for the common good of our industry. The following are many of the activities that the MIC promotes:
